“Therefore as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” Colossians 3:12 (NIV)

Though certainly not the newest, Christianity is still a relatively new kid on the block among the major world religions. While it was still considered a cult, many thought that Jesus would return in their lifetime. Most would agree, such has not proven to be the case. What happens when a longed-for hope is delayed? What happens when it is delayed for months, years, a lifetime?

Patience is a fruit that often seems birthed in frustration. After all, if there is no frustration, there is no patience. ┬áIf the question how much longer does not arise, there would be nothing to be patient about. A synonym often used for patience is ‘long-suffering’.

Though I have developed a degree of patience, it certainly has ways to go before blossoming into maturity. Years are definitely a stretch for me, forget lifetimes. The fact is that the most progress is made over lifetimes. The world is getting better. There are far fewer wars, drug and alcohol abuse, teen pregnancies, and violence than perhaps there ever have been in recorded history. Check it out.

Though life has its vicissitudes, those who are patient can appreciate the fruit that after many stumbles and hardships may someday be born.
